Hostels
The drive was about an hour long. Alonzo, Asa, and Rachel were in the rental car. Kevin and I in his car. He drives an old Honda shuttle, a car that by all merits should be dead but just keeps going. We were driving from Fairfield to San Francisco. Kevin had just graduated BSSB and we all took a few extra days to explore San Francisco with him.
We had all been planning this to be as cheap as possible. So we chose to stay in a hostel. Something only Kevin and Alonzo had done before. So I wasn’t sure what to expect when we pulled up. I think it was an old army base. When we checked in there was some issue with the rooming. They like to keep the genders separated. We didn’t want Rachel off on her own without Asa, so we all got put in a big room together.
The room just had single bunk beds lining the walls with storage lockers at the bottom for your stuff. I loved this place. It had a big family feeling. Everyone that was staying there was on a big adventure. There was a big common room, a huge kitchen, and a place for everyone to watch movies. Sadly it was Halloween that night, so the festivities were in full swing.
My most vivid memory of the hostel was sitting in the common room late into the night talking and watching videos on our iPads. Every night Alonzo would come and sit with us and promptly fall asleep on the couch. Rachel found a video of Kevin making a funny sound from a day back in Texas. It was the funniest thing in that moment. We played it over and over.
Overall the experience was a great one. I await the days when we won’t have to fear random crazy people. When that sense of family will be felt everywhere. When everyone can go and have adventures, stay wherever, and meet people.
Everyone has a story to tell or dreams to live.
