Better Beds
I don’t remember my first bed. I’m betting it was just a standard spring and frame setup. The first bed I remember was my water bed. It was so high up off the ground. Under it six dresser drawers resided unused. The headboard area was what I loved; it had sliding door cabinets and tons of room for my Legos to stay. I think that’s when I started staying in bed for activities. Right now at this moment I am in my bed.
I read books here, I watch the fan blades spin here, and I hear new songs here. This is my area for anything and everything. I would go to ‘bed’ when my parents told me to, but I would pop in a cassette and spend the next few hours listening and building Legos. Having imaginary space fights and living in my own world, till my eyes got too tired and I had to succumb to sleep. I liked that bed, but I found lots of faults with it. Waterbeds are not my cup of tea.
My next bed that I remember was the California King. It was huge. You could fit four average sized people in it with no issue. During the life span of this bed I was becoming more social and it was often the gathering place of my friends. We would huddle around my laptop on it watching funny videos or spend hours just talking about everything and nothing. It once again set upon me this idea that beds are not just for sleeping.
So now in my life I am in a state of flux. My life has no true stability. Reflected in that is my current bed. It is ten inches of memory foam. Don’t misunderstand me, this is probably the most comfortable sleeping situation I’ve ever had. It’s that I can move it in ten minutes on my own that shows my mindset. With this bed it’s all about that safety and comfort. That regardless of what happens to me, I can roll up my bed and move it with me.
I wonder about what my next bed will be and what stage of life it will show me I am in. I hope it ties together all my favorite parts of my previous beds. That whatever dreaming I do in it, whoever comes over and watches funny videos, or however stable I am. That it’s a happy place full of comfort and pillows. Lots of pillows.
